As I read through the forums, I see several people talking about how many channels are being bound for upstream and downstream traffic and there is always some mention of speeds associated with the number of channels. It seems as if normal is now 8 channels down and 4 channels up.
So I login to my modem and on the status tab I see 5 channels downstream and 2 upstream. If normal is 8 and 4, then why only 5/2 for me? I am supposed to have the 100Mbps service but on a good day I can manage about 60. Does this have something to do with that? I have tried my speeds against a lot of thing ranging from newsgroups to torrents to MSDN downloads which usually run 2-5GB each. Of course if I run a speed test against the Chicago area server that the Mediacom techs always use, I get between 60 and 70 fairly often. Any other server sees a considerable dropoff. My normal speed is generally somewhere between 30-40Mbps. While I do understand I will probably never see the full 100 due to various overhead, I still believe we should be entitled to 70-80% of what we pay for.
Another question along these lines is normal values for signal strength. What is normal and good? Mine are running between -6.88 and -7.76 dBmV right now and signal to noise is 34.9-35.3 dB.
One reason for asking is that MediacomChad was working with me the other night and at that time he said I had some noise on the line. I do have a service appointment tomorrow so I want to see what happens when the tech is finished.
