[Cable HSI] Standard Definition channels, why?

Now that most of our systems are strictly digital, why are there still standard definition channels in the system where a duplicate high definition exists? For example why carry a SD and HD channel of ESPN? Don't standard definition decoder units also decode HD channels, albeit at 480i? Wouldn't removing the SD channel duplicates free up more bandwidth for more content? My only thought on this is the whole letter boxing issue that happens when receiving widescreen content on a 4:3 screen. But I don't buy that argument anymore. It's 2015, most new content is widescreen, and it's been available for 10+ years. Maybe it's time to those with old TVs to either learn to deal with letterboxing, or upgrade.
