Today I received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Mediacom. She said that my modem would soon be incompatible and they want to recall all of them like mine and replace them with other models that would be three times faster.
I asked if this would change my bill. She said yes it would raise it +$5/month.
I asked if I could get it in writing. She said no.
I said thanks, but I'll keep the modem I have until I get something in writing saying it will stop working unless I upgrade.
I have an Arris TM601A cable modem rented from Mediacom. Today my Speedtest.net numbers are 37ms latency with 16.09 Mbps up and 3.00 Mbps down. At this time I have no need for more bandwidth, and I'm not particularly interested in paying more right now. Maybe if I did more regular video conferencing at home for work, or if I cared more about hi-def video streaming, then perhaps I might want more bandwidth.
Is the "recall" mentioned by this person a real technical requirements upgrade? I mean is Mediacom really upgrading their equipment and modem support in such a way that this current modem will stop functioning? If so, what is the time frame for sundowning these modems and why haven't I seen a warning about this show up with my recent billing statements, email, or some other mailing?
Thanks.
