I received a strange call from Mediacom on Friday night. The first strange thing was that the caller ID number was from a local area code. After I answered, I thought it was just another 'would you like sign up for phone service' call. I receive those about twice a year. The man did ask if I would be interested in phone service for $5/mo. I declined.
Then he offered to upgrade my internet service to Ultra Plus (150dn/20up/2000GB cap) for $5 less per month than my current bill for one year. He said that he was calling from the regional office and that it was a gratitude offer since I was a long-term customer in good standing. He said that there was no contract and that I would continue to receive a lesser discount on the Ultra Plus tier after the year was up and that I could go back at any time. I told him that I currently subscribe to the Prime Plus (50dn/5up/350GB cap) tier and pay $70/mo and he reaffirmed that yes, the upgrade would be $5 less for the year.
I was (and still am) highly suspicious of his offer. I found it unlikely that Mediacom would call me up to offer me faster service for a lower price. I spent 10 minutes on the phone with the man discussing his offer. I made him go over it many times. Eventually I agreed.
The upgrade was applied quickly. I wasn't at home when I received the call, but it was done by the time I arrived at my house an hour later. It still sounds too good to be true, and I really wish I had a copy of that phone call. I guess I will find out when I receive the next bill or two whether the offer really is exactly as claimed, but with the man's reassurances that I could change back to my old tier at any time I figured that I had little to lose by giving him the benefit of the doubt.
So for now, I offer to Mediacom a provisional thank you. The speed upgrade part has gone through without issue. If the billing also proceeds as promised, then my thank you shall be sincere.
