Several times per day we experience waves of slow page loads and server-not-found errors. Often it takes two or more retries to access the desired site. The server-not-found errors are preceded by a "Looking up (foo.bar.net)..." message that lingers for several seconds in the browser's status bar.
The problem appears to be at its worst during the 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. hours CDT.
I have run speedtests during many of these long DNS lookups. They have shown that speeds and ping times remain good.
Observed on all three PCs on our home network--two Win7 desktops and one Win10 laptop. All PCs are wired and run Windows Firewall and Webroot SecureAnywhere 9.0.11.70.
The gateway is an Arris/Motorola SBG6580, purchased 2014.11.05. Although it is not on the list of supported modems, we have had no prior issues using MCHSI with this gateway. The gateway's firmware does not appear to permit the user to select one's own DNS addresses, and I understand that any firmware updates for this gateway will have to come from elsewhere.

The problem has persisted after:
* Updating the browser (Firefox 48.0.2)
* Clearing the browser cache
* Removing, then re-adding the browser in Windows Firewall
* Using a different browser (Internet Explorer 11.0.9600.18376)
* Flushing the DNS cache via ipconfig
* Selecting automatic (Mediacom-assigned), OpenDNS, and Google DNS addresses in network adaptor properties
* Disabling wireless in the gateway
* Powering down the gateway, disconnecting the coax, waiting one minute, then reversing the procedure
* Moving the gateway to the first splitter in from the Mediacom access box. In its previous position behind two splitters and a surge protector, downstream power levels were in the sweet spot of -1 to +1. After the move they are +9 to +10.
