There are so many posts here about slow upload speeds and high latency that I thought it prudent to advise my fellow mediacommunists as to the situation. By changing DNS servers from Mediacom's default DNS servers to another Public DNS server your upload speed will dramatically improve. For a reasonable explanation check my posts on this thread: "Upload Speeds way down-Cedar Rapids". My posts are at the bottom second page.
If you're not familiar with DNS servers or how to change out, there are many extensive articles/guides as well as DNS server listings available on-line. Here's a couple to get you started:
- Pictoral walk-through:
http://solverbase.com/w/Windows_10:_Changing_DNS_Servers
- A short list (15) of popular DNS servers:
https://twitgoo.com/best-free-dns-servers/
- Plus a extensive list of worldwide DNS servers:
https://public-dns.info//
Just to know:
- You may place more than one DNS server address from the same provider or from unrelated providers. Your machine will querry either depending on traffic.
- I've noticed that most articles I've encountered push either Google or Norton's DNS servers. If you're good with that cool...if not, find one that suits your own sensabilities.
- If you're a gamer and enjoy playing international servers Comodo has stratigically placed nodes available worldwide. I've been using Comodo products
for years and I'm happy. But this is my personal choice. Please do your homework and choose a DNS provider that suits you.
- Also be aware that some DNS servers (OpenDNS for example) automatically block sites and pages in the name of "parental control" or to filter so said;
"bad" sites. if that's what you're looking for, fine. If not, choose one that's less "protective" and more open to the web et al. Again surf around for more info...it's all out there.
