Sorry to create a bit of an unfocused thread here but I have a few questions that may or may not be related.
I've been a Mediacom customer for the last 2.5 years. Soon after installation we bought an Arris Surfboard SB6141 modem (current firmware: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.16-SCM00-NOSH) and returned the Mediacom modem. I'm going from memory, but I could swear this was on the list of Mediacom-approved modems at the time, but it no longer is. We also use a TP-Link AC1750 Archer C7 v2 router.
In recent months we've had what I thought was pretty spotty service at times, with increasing frequency. Just quick outages that would last 10 minutes and usually resolve themselves after I unplugged the modem. So I didn't think much of it or contact tech support. But three days ago, it went down for an hour; the Mediacom app didn't indicate an outage and multiple modem resets didn't help, so I called tech support. After some testing we determined that the splitter had gone bad. (We have one line coming into the house, with a splitter that sends a line to the DVR and another line to the cable modem.) So I set out to fix it, but after trying two replacement splitters the internet was still out.
It turned out that when the modem was connected directly to the line coming from the wall, it worked fine regardless of which splitter I used. But put the splitter back in and it doesn't work. (I should add that the cable TV was unaffected - unless of course it was disconnected while the splitter was removed and the modem was hooked up to the only remaining line.)
Just for kicks I re-did the modem authorization process on Mediacom's web site. And with the exception of one brief outage/reset it's been working fine since.
I attached a screen shot of the modem signal, and here is a link to the line quality test: http://www.dslreports.com/testhistory/1970792/033c7. All speed tests are normal for what I would expect.
So...a lengthy narrative but here are my questions:
1. If my modem is not on the list of Mediacom-approved modems should I get an approved one? Or just leave well enough alone as long as it works?
2. Was my splitter issue a fluke? If not, how do I resolve the issue of a modem that doesn't work when attached to a (Mediacom-installed) splitter?
3. This is the unrelated part...but how does a MoCA interact with all this? Do I need one, how do I get one, and what do I do with it? (Back story...a Mediacom sales guy shows up at my door 3 months ago offering a "loyalty discount" or something...add a phone line and the overall bill goes down. I said yes and let him in to look at our setup. He said we don't have a MoCA and made it sound like this had something to do with using our own modem and router. At the time I'd never heard of such a thing...I've since done some homework but still have no idea how this fits in. But if I'm potentially replacing a modem I'd like to do it right.)
I'll answer any questions I can if it'll help clarify. Thanks in advance.
