[SD] 500-1000mbps - Think Twice Before doing it

Im going to make this as brief and easy as I can. Mediacom provides 5 different plans. 60,100,200,500, and 1000. Mediacom provides the 200 and under data transmission across a 16x3 DOCSIS channel solution while 500 and 1000 is across OFMD. OFMD is simply a multiplexing technology similar to your wireless router. They chose to implement this because they cannot afford to ugrade their local runs to fiber due to the rural nature of their company. That said, I too ordered 1000mbps coming into a new community 3 weeks ago. Never got anywhere near those speeds on the true internet backbone. In fact, I had nothing but issues with speeds bouncing up and and down like a Jack Russell effin terrier. Additionally, for the first three weeks my service was barely usable because the modem was constantly resetting. After three service calls, including one where I was treated like a complete idiot by some young kid (who insisted my reason for getting 200mbps speeds was because I had a 10/100 network card...HUH?) we finally got the modem to stop constantly resetting. I then downdraded my service to 200mbs to get on the DOCSIS channels and guess what? I have solid reliable speed both on their internal network and on backbone speed tests. Averaging 255mbps on each. When on 1000, if I did a speed test on local network and got say 400mbps, then on backbone speedtest I would get maybe 175 -200. It was almost always 50% difference between the two. I asked for some kind of compensation for all the hassle and all I got was an adjustment to get charged the 200mbps tier rate instead of 1000 for the first month. Nevermind the effin modem constantly rebooting or that I had to take of work 3 different days for service calls.... If I had a choice, I would not stay with Mediacom but I dont have a choice. So my advice to you is to make sure you are getting what you are paying for. I found loads of stories just like mine right here on this website and many others. All with the same issue. Mediacom needs to fix their OFMD implementation. Its broken. Severely. Oh...and for anyone from Mediacom listening... Dean in the 57006 area worked hard for me, and with me to get the rebooting issue lined out. He deserves a kudos award and I hope you give him one.
