Hi There - I recently upgraded my internet tier which required me to also upgrade the antiquated modem I had to a new Hintron modem/wifi access point combo -- upgrading also provided me with a new IP.
Since upgrading, I have not been able to connect to any IRC network on ANY of the 4 machines in my house. (3 Mac's and 1 PC). I currently have wifi turned off on the modem, and have an Airport Extreme connected in bridge mode to allow my timemachine backups to function. My main computer is connected directly to the AirportExtreme via Ethernet. I have set port forwarding on the Hintron modem (although I dont think it was necessary) for the specific ports needed, for the specific IP's on my network. (For all intents and purposes, this information is moot as when connected directly to the modem via Ethernet, IRC clients still do not connect.)
I first contacted MCC level 1 support this afternoon and tried my best to explain what IRC was and was told "Mediacom does not support IRC" and was then given a number to call to set up access -- which routed to Microsoft(?)
Upon calling back the rep I spoke with that time was at least aware that IRC is not a "service" that mediacom would need to add or remove "service" for, however he too had no answers aside from the canned "reset the modem, etc, etc". He then transferred me to "Premium tech support" (Level 2?), and that rep had even less knowledge/answers on the topic, who eventually told me to call back to level 1 support as "something may be blocked with my IP." (Haven't heard that one before!)
Instead of calling back I tried the chat feature. That particular rep went through all of the same steps as before, asked me to reinstall the software, contact IRC support (ha!) and eventually agreed to open a Level 2 support ticket.
I have yet to hear back but thought I'd give this forum a shot for thoughts and ideas. As far as I can tell, there aren't any specific settings on the modem/router causing the connection to fail.
Note: I have tried several IRC clients for both my Mac's and PC, as well as different servers and networks. The PC I am using connects with the same client and same server when I am using a non-Mediacom connection. I have used IRC for many years prior to upgrading without any issues.
