Hi All
I am new to Charles City IA and MediaCom. At the moment I am using the consumer MediaCom service included in the house we are renting whilst we look for our own house.
I run a small Internet consultancy/ hosting business and work out of home and rely on the Internet connection for VOIP and communicating with the servers in our DC. We also use the Internet connection for Video using a Roku and Apple TV. When we get our own place the intention is to get a business account with 100MB/s speed. The cost is out of this world but there doesn't appear to be much choice.
The thing that is starting to worry me though is the reliability of of the service. The service in the rental house since arriving on the weekend is horrible. The Apple TV cannot stream (SD) video for more than 30 secs before the wheel spins and then it loses the connection. I haven't been able to use SKYPE video at all because it is always super pixalated and every few minutes the connection fails. The SIP phone audio is understandable for only about 80% of the time and calls get dropped.Uploading via FTP is impossible as the modem just keeps resetting, which it also does if my wife starts using the Internet as well as me.
At the moment I am falling back to a cell connection which is just a little slower but more importantly it has been solid.
So my question is this normal? Does a 'business connection' get a higher level of reliability?
I would appreciate some feedback before buying a place and getting locked in. At the moment I am seriously thinking about reconsidering the move here.
TIA
Antony
